The forty-two letters, arranged in the sequence formed by the words of the Ana Bekoach prayer, constitute a sacred code capable of opening the source of the Divine power that sustains both Israel and the entire world.
Each of the prayer’s seven verses consists of six words, corresponding to the following letter combinations:
ABG YTZ, KRA SATAN, NGD YKSH, BTR TZTG, HKB TNA, YGL PZK, SHKV TZIT.
This Divine Name is arranged into groups of six letters, corresponding to the six wings of the Seraphim—the highest order of angels-and into seven rows, corresponding to the Seven Sefirot upon which Creation is founded, the seven days of the week, and the seven planets.Because of the profound significance of this sacred Name, many recite the Ana Bekoach prayer before going to sleep, just before the soul ascends to its spiritual source. This time is regarded as one of the sacred hours associated with the ascent of the higher worlds.
“Ana Bekoach, Gedulat Yemincha, Tatir Tzerurah”
Sefirat Chesed – ABG YTZ
The power of this verse encompasses all the other verses. It connects us directly to the frequency of the Tree of Life. It is the seed that contains within it the entire tree-its trunk, branches, leaves, and ultimately the fruit that will appear at the end of the process of growth.
This verse transcends time, movement, and space, connecting us to the reality of wholeness, unity, and truth-the World of Truth. Through genuine spiritual work focused on connecting with this frequency, this Divine letter combination has the power to awaken within us unconditional love-love that expects nothing in return.
ABG are the first letters of the Hebrew alphabet. They represent the root, the original seed, and the very beginning of Creation.
YTZ are the final letters of the Hebrew alphabet when divided into groups of ten: Yod (י) is the last letter in the group of single digits, Tav (ת) is the final regular letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and Tzadi Sofit (ץ) is the last of the five final letters. Together they symbolize the beginning, the middle, and the end, embracing all worlds as one.
The word “Ana” expresses the attitude of a person who approaches the Creator with humility and supplication, free of pride or the belief that everything is accomplished solely through one’s own strength and power.
Sefirat Chesed represents loving-kindness, compassion, generosity, and unconditional giving. Therefore, the phrase “Gedulat Yemincha” (“the greatness of Your right hand”) symbolizes the Divine right hand-the attribute of Chesed. In this prayer, we ask to be judged and blessed through Divine mercy rather than through strict judgment.
Finally, we ask that we may “Tatir Tzerurah”-that our bonds be released. We pray for the removal of whatever binds or limits us, whether in our livelihood, our health, our exile, or our emotional and spiritual well-being.
“Kabel Rinat Amecha, Sagvenu, Taharenu, Nora”
Sefirat Gevurah – KRA SATAN
Through joyful prayer, we ask to restore the worlds that were torn apart and fell from their state of wholeness. This Divine letter combination has the power to tear away, nullify, and sweeten harsh judgments, as well as dissolve the illusion of Satan, which pulls us toward the abyss.
The letter combination KRA SATAN literally means “Tear Satan Apart.” Here we recognize that Satan is our adversary, and we seek to separate ourselves from its influence. To free ourselves from it, we ask that the gateways-the small openings through which the consciousness of Satan enters our lives-be closed. Through these openings come confusion, uncertainty, and every form of disorder that prevents the infinite flow of Divine Light from entering our lives.
“Sagvenu, Taharenu, Nora.” Purity is hidden within the very letters of the word Satan, which represents the opposite of holiness. Receiving Divine abundance requires purification from the spiritual impurities and obscurity of the material world. Therefore, we call upon God to purify us and prepare us to receive the Divine Light. In this verse, God is invoked by the name Nora–the Awesome One.
“Na Gibor, Dorshei Yichudecha, Kevavat Shomrem”
Sefirat Tiferet – NGD YKSH
Through NGD, we ask that the channels of abundance be opened to us through the Fifty Gates of Wisdom. Through the unification achieved in prayer, we unite all the spiritual worlds that influence us at their very source.
This is the channel of loving-kindness, the opening of doors, and the flow of both spiritual abundance and material sustenance. Abundance can flow into our lives only when we resist the desire to take and receive solely for ourselves. Instead, we learn to receive in order to share. Only when we oppose selfishness and replace it with generosity and genuine care for others does the flow of abundance increase in every aspect of our lives.
We ask the Blessed Creator to protect those who seek His Oneness: “Guard them as the apple of Your eye.” Just as we guard our own eyes from forbidden sights, impurity, and immodesty, guarding the eyes is one of the fundamental principles that strengthens the spiritual power of these sacred unifications. In the same way, we ask to be protected from the evil eye, so that no harm may come to us.
YKSH is associated with the mystery of the body’s continual renewal. The reason aging and death occur is that the consciousness of the desire to receive only for oneself slows down-or even halts-the body’s natural process of cellular renewal. Through this Divine letter combination, we receive the power to transform our consciousness and slow the process of aging by connecting to genuine giving and selfless sharing.
“Barchem, Taharem, Rachamei Tzidkatecha Tamid Gomlem”
Sefirat Netzach – BTR TZTG
The letter combination BTR TZTG connects us with the power of perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles. As we grow and develop spiritually, the challenges and difficulties we encounter also increase. Therefore, this verse grants us the inner strength to draw, from the windows of the Higher Worlds, the vision, confidence, and certainty that lead to true victory.
It is the power that enables us to rise and continue after we have stumbled, to complete the tasks we have begun, to work with determination, to overcome obstacles, to remove every doubt, and to purify ourselves from all impurity.
We ask the Creator to bless us, purify us, and judge us according to His attribute of mercy, even when, according to the attribute of justice, we may not deserve it. Through His righteousness, may He bestow His kindness upon us as an act of grace and compassion, even if our deeds have not yet made us worthy of receiving His mercy.
“Chasin Kadosh, Berov Tuvcha Nahel Adatecha”
Sefirat Hod – HKB TNA
Through this verse, we may ask to perceive the mysteries of the universe and the truth that exists beyond the logic of the five physical senses. It connects us to the power of seeing reality with clarity beyond the physical world.
This verse enables us to understand that everything that happens in our lives has a cause. That cause lies in something we have done, said, or thought. It reminds us that we are responsible for everything that takes place in our lives and grants us the ability to perceive the ultimate consequences of our actions. If we could truly see the final results of our negative actions, we would refrain from entering darkness and descending into the abyss.
The Sefirot of Netzach and Hod function together, for prophecy depends upon these two Sefirot. The human soul is deeply spiritual and profoundly connected to God. When a person cleaves to God with wholehearted devotion and the soul burns with longing for Him, a spiritual light enters that person-a light even greater than the highest lights of the soul itself.It is this illumination that bestows profound spiritual power, the illumination of prophecy, which flows through the Sefirot of Netzach and Hod.
“Yachid Ge’eh, Le’Amcha P’neh, Zochrei Kedushatecha”
Sefirat Yesod – YGL PZK
“Yachid” refers to the Blessed Creator, the one and only King of the entire universe, the sole Creator of all existence.
“Ge’eh” does not refer to human pride. Rather, it expresses that the Holy One is exalted far beyond all human understanding, elevated above every concept we are capable of grasping. Human pride is viewed negatively because it reflects a person’s belief that they are above others. God’s exaltedness, however, is His true and incomparable greatness.
Every blessing a person receives depends upon the degree of his or her connection with the Blessed Creator. Each individual enters this world with a destiny that has been determined from the very beginning, often for reasons hidden from us and sometimes connected to previous incarnations. Yet despite what has been decreed, our destiny can still change-for better or for worse. Positive change depends primarily upon the depth of our relationship with God.
Therefore, we pray: “Le’Amcha P’neh”–Turn Your face toward Your people. May Your Divine countenance shine upon Your people, for it is through Your light that every blessing flows.
This verse corresponds to Sefirat Yesod, the spiritual foundation upon which the entire structure of Creation rests. If a person wishes to attain higher spiritual levels, greater spiritual power, deeper connections with the higher worlds, and a closer relationship with the Blessed Creator, the first and most essential requirement is the preservation of holiness.
Guarding holiness through purity, modesty, observing the sanctity of family life, and guarding the covenant (Shmirat HaBrit) forms the foundation upon which the entire spiritual structure stands.
The sixth verse also corresponds to the sixth millennium of Creation. During this era, the wisdom of Kabbalah and the teachings of the Zohar will become increasingly revealed and spread without limitation. Humanity will awaken to the consciousness of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” treating every person with dignity and respect through the spiritual power of the letter combination YGL PZK.
“Shav’atenu Kabel, U’Shema Tza’akatenu, Yodea Ta’alumot”
Sefirat Malchut – SHKV TZIT
The letter combination SHKV TZIT connects us to the infinite treasures that await humanity at the completion of Tikkun (Gmar HaTikkun). Such a connection grants us unlimited strength, especially in moments when we feel exhausted and spiritually depleted.
This verse corresponds to the seventh millennium. According to the Divine Plan of Creation, this will be a time when Satan will no longer have any influence over humanity. It will be a reality free of hatred, jealousy, anger, and every form of negativity.
The unique power of the Ana Bekoach prayer is its ability to elevate the soul. Therefore, the words “Shav’atenu Kabel” (“Accept our supplication”) and “U’Shema Tza’akatenu” (“Hear our cry”) are not only a plea for God to receive our prayers-they also conclude this sacred prayer because, through their power, we beseech the Blessed Creator:
Grant us spiritual ascent. Grant us spiritual strength. This is the essence of our prayer and our heartfelt request.
After completing the seventh verse, we quietly recite one additional verse (except on Yom Kippur). Its purpose is to seal and preserve all the spiritual energy that has been awakened, so that it will not disperse or become vulnerable to negative forces that might draw from its power.
We then recite:
“Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto Le’olam Va’ed.”
“Blessed be the Name of His glorious Kingdom forever and ever.”
